Knee Pain Physical Therapy in Hanover, MA

Your Knee Doesn't Have to Be the Reason You Stop

Whether it's grinding with every squat, flaring up on the stairs, or giving out mid-run, knee pain stops you from doing what you're built for. At Podium, we find the actual cause and build a plan to fix it.

Waiting and Modifying Isn't a Plan

You've modified around it long enough

Skipping squats, avoiding stairs, cutting runs short. You've been working around this knee for months. Modifying forever isn't recovery, it's just delayed frustration.

Rest makes it better, training makes it worse

The pattern is familiar: take a week off, feel fine, ramp back up, and it flares again. Without addressing the root cause, the same cycle repeats every training block.

Imaging didn't give you real answers

You've had X-rays or an MRI and been told it's not that serious. But the pain is still there. A diagnosis on a scan doesn't mean you have a plan to get past it.

Common Conditions We Treat

Knee Problems We Help Active Adults Work Through

From patellofemoral pain to IT band syndrome to post-surgical return, we address the knee issues keeping South Shore athletes from training, running, and competing at full capacity.

Runner's Knee (Patellofemoral Pain) - Anterior knee pain that worsens with running, stairs, or loading that keeps you cutting workouts short.

IT Band Syndrome - Lateral knee tightness and pain that builds with mileage or repeated loading and shuts down training before your target is reached.

Meniscus Irritation - Pain, stiffness, or swelling around the joint line that limits range of motion and makes deep squatting painful.

Patellar Tendinopathy - Aching or pain at the tendon below the kneecap that worsens with loading, jumping, or high training volume.

Post-Surgical Knee Rehab - Structured return-to-training progressions after surgery to rebuild strength, restore movement, and get back to full activity safely.

Osteoarthritis-Related Knee Pain - Stiffness, aching, and loading intolerance that limits what you can do in the gym or on the course.

General Knee Pain with Activity - Pain with squatting, lunging, or running that doesn't have a clean diagnosis but keeps getting in the way.

What Active Adults Are Saying

See how patients on the South Shore got their knees back under them and returned to training without holding back.

Sam is amazing. He's eval'ed and worked with a number of the members at JMF and everybody has had nothing but great things to say. He's dedicated, compassionate, knowledgeable, and friendly and it shows up in all of his sessions. Whether you're an athlete looking to get back on the field or an adult looking to get a little more out of your PT experience, Sam has all the tools to meet you where you are and get you moving in the right direction.

Sam is seriously the best physical therapist out there! As an American Ninja Warrior competitor, I’ve dealt with my fair share of ankle and shoulder injuries, and Sam has been incredible every step of the way. He really takes the time to understand the demands of my sport and tailors everything to what I need. He’s super flexible, always adjusts to how I’m feeling that day, and gives me exercises I can actually keep up with outside of PT too. I’ve seen so much improvement thanks to him — couldn’t recommend him more!

If you're looking for a physical therapist to help with any range of issues, and especially ACL recovery, choose Podium. I tore my ACL in March, had reconstruction surgery in April, and developed some patellar pain during recovery when I went back to work. From the beginning stages of just trying to get my knee to bend, to working through strengthening while recovering from my patellar pain, Sam has been so helpful. He listens to what you’re experiencing, asks great questions to get to the bottom of things, and gets creative with solutions that work for you. He’s also great at knowing when to help you push through difficulty and when to pause or pivot the approach. I couldn’t have gotten through this recovery without him! You won’t regret choosing Podium to have in your corner, no matter the issue you’re dealing with.

Frequently Asked Questions

Knee pain brings up a lot of questions before starting PT. Here's what we hear most from active adults on the South Shore.

Do I need an MRI before starting PT?

No. Your knee can be evaluated through movement and hands-on assessment without imaging. If imaging would change the approach, you'll be told before you need to arrange it. Most active adults can get started right away.

Can I keep training with a knee injury?

In most cases, yes. The goal is to keep you moving while we address what's causing the problem. You'll get clear guidance on what's safe to continue and what to modify so you're not losing ground while the knee heals.

How long will it take to feel better?

It depends on the injury and how long it's been going on. After your evaluation, you'll get a realistic timeline based on your specific situation — not a generic estimate. Most people have a clear sense of what to expect within the first few sessions.

Do I need a doctor's referral?

No referral needed. Massachusetts is a direct access state, so you can start PT without seeing a physician first. Just reach out and we'll get you set up for an evaluation.

What if I've already tried PT and it didn't work?

A lot of patients come to us after a prior PT experience that didn't stick. Generic exercise sheets and aide-run sessions miss the individual factors driving the problem. At Podium, you get a full 60 minutes one-on-one with a DPT, finding what others may have missed and building a plan around how you specifically move.

Still have questions?

Wondering if PT can help your specific knee situation? Reach out and we'll give you an honest answer.
